Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)

The developers of Neuro Linguistic
Programming thought that « Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a
model of the special world of magic and illusion made up by human
behaviour and communication. It is the study of the components of
perception and behaviour making our experience possible. The
expression Neuro Linguistic Programming shows the basic procedure used
by all human beings to code, to transfer, to direct and to modify
behaviour » (Dilts, Grinder, R. and L. Bandler, Delozier – Neuro
Linguistic Programming).
Neuro Linguistic Programming offers various techniques for personal
growth, to develop one’s potential, to improve communication and make
it extremely successful in any aspect: communication with ourselves
and with others.
Our mind can be compared to a storage medium. When we are born it is
completely blank and clean, just as a sheet of paper. Data are written
on this medium one day after the other (the results of our experiences).
This is usually done basing upon the behaviour of our parents and of
people near us. When we are children we live the “input phase”: any
kind of data is entered. These are stored in our “mental software”
within the first three years of our life. However the evolution and
update of this software goes on until approximately twelve years of
age. The mental software includes our values and our beliefs: all
those deep convictions conditioning (often limiting) all our
experiences and the perception we have of the outer world.
Our mental software is to be found in our unconscious mind; this is
the reason why we cannot rationally control this software, but we can
learn how to get in contact with our unconscious mind!
Everybody daily experiences this difference in targets: between
instinctive needs, belonging to our unconscious mind, and rational
planning decided by our logical mind. This mechanism is outside our
immediate awareness: the first consequence is that we often feel
inappropriate and uncomfortable, without knowing the reason. We
rationally look for the cause for any behaviour we have and want to
control any aspect of our life using rationality. This aspect of
western culture is sometimes limiting, or even frustrating, if we
really want to have a deep and successful communication with ourselves.
The reason is that our unconscious mind, which is out of any rational
control, is responsible for most of our life (more than 90%) while
only a small percentage (10%) lies within the control of our rational
mind. To the extent that we are able to have these two parts
interact to get to our goals in the most successful way we can say we
have a good communication with ourselves.
Thanks to Neuro Linguistic Programming some techniques were
elaborated, allowing us to discover if our rational goals are
corresponding to the needs of the deepest part of ourselves. We are
able to discover if there are any obstacles preventing us from getting
to our goals. Moreover NLP offers fast and successful methods to get
into direct contact with our essence and modify the limits within
ourselves.
